We're selling

It's official. Tom and I have decided to sell the unit and upgrade to a house. We've signed the paperwork and it will be dropped off to the agents later today.

The plan for now is to sell the unit and in a best case scenario we will rent the unit back from the owners while we look for a house. If that doesn't come to fruitition, we can rent somewhere else in the meantime. There is a third scenario which is us finding a house and having it settle on the same day as the unit but we're not banking on that.

Stay tuned for house hunting updates, a link to our unit on realestate.com.au and pictures of our for sale sign.

I have a new love

Spherical Timesheet Logger

This is the best program I've used in a while. With a job like mine, it can be really hard to keep track of billable hours for clients. During the day I can do billable work for up to 10 clients and by the end of the day, not all of the work I've done is recorded somewhere.

Spherical is great because it sits in the background and monitors what I'm working on during the day. It will tell me what I was looking at in Firefox and IE, which emails I was reading and responding to Outlook, etc. Basically, at the end of the day, I can go into the program and assign work that I did to clients which I can then log and invoice to clients.

If you do a job, like mine I recommend downloading the trial and trying it out. I think by the end of a week, you'll be converted.

And no, I wasn't paid to write this, I just seriously love this program so much that I felt the need to give it a shout out

Can I claim one lost thong on insurance?

Last night Brisbane got its third big storm in less than a week. Unlike the previous storms, Tomas and I were out an about when this one hit.

We were attempting to get to Spring Hill to collect our organic fruit and vegetable box last night. The traffic was bad thanks the storm the night before which had flooded the Inner City Bypass. We spent a good 20 minutes in traffic watching the storm decend upon Spring Hill. It started raining and then we heard the hail pinging on the car. Not long after the hail, the torrential downpour began. We couldn't see much past the bonnet. Unfortunately Spring Hill is hilly and we couldn't find anywhere on top of a hill to stop so we continued onto the fruit place (which coincidentially is on top of a hill). I stuck one leg with one thong attached to my foot out of the car (just dangling it, not touching the ground) and the water rushing down the drain ripped my thong from my foot never to be seen again.

I'd like to say that was the worst of our experience in the rain, but it got better. After sheltering in the house of the woman who coordinates the fruit boxes, Tomas decided he wanted to try and make it home. It was still pouring down and hailing but for some reason we thought it would be a good idea. Just as we drove off, the hail got bigger. Like the size of tennis balls. One of them hit our windscreen. Expletives were yelled but the windscreen showed no damage. When we'd made it back to the Valley we decided to ditch going home and try for Vanessa and Cameron's. We turned into Dogget St which was a giant puddle and decided to turn off when we noticed the cars in front of us parting the water. Unfortunately we didn't choose the best place to turn and when we turned into the side street, our car made a bow wave. I kid you not. We had water on the bonnet. Luckily we were going uphill and there was no more bow waves.

We tried to get to Ness and Cam's but there was too much water on the road, so we drove to the top of the hill at Teneriffe and parked. I was quite happy to stay in the car but Tomas wanted to get inside (in hindsight sitting in a car under a tree during a storm probably wasn't the best idea). So despite the horrendous rain, we got out of the car and ran to Ness and Cam's. We were soaking wet and I didn't have shoes but at least we were inside.

It turns out that the car has some hail damage but considering that and a lost thong was the worst that happened, we did okay.

Yoghurt Making - Attempt 1

On Saturday I made my first batch of yoghurt with my new (second-hand from ebay) yoghurt maker. It was an outstanding success and astonishing easy to do.

First, you need the basic ingredients: milk, milk powder and some bacteria. You need the milk powder to increase the amount of protein in the milk as cow's milk will make a very runny yoghurt without it (apparently). I've used UHT milk to eliminate one step of the process. If you use normal pasteurised milk, you need to heat it to 110 degrees Celsius to kill any rogue bacteria.

The yoghurt bacteria can be sourced either from yoghurt with live cultures or from some pure yoghurt bacteria starter. I got some starter from Martin at work. The important bit about the bacteria no matter what kind you have, is adding it at the right point. According to the Internet, the right point is when your milk is at 43 degrees Celsius. This requires a thermometer.

After you've added your bacteria, you need to keep the whole mixture warm for at least four hours. Thanks to my yoghurt maker this was easy. Simply fill the jars, put the lids on, and switch the machine on.

Once they're done, they will be set and will probably have a little bit of liquid (it's the whey) sitting on top of the yoghurt. There are two options at this point, put the yoghurt in the fridge for enjoyment later. Or if you'd like thicker yoghurt, you can strain the yoghurt in some muslin in the fridge as this drains off the whey.

Glutaner - The Wonder Beer

Whilst not a perfect imitation of a Pilsner, it's pretty good. It costs about the same about a Silly Yaks. I think this beer is a bit nicer, less of the "zinginess" of Silly Yaks. It's made in the Netherlands from sorghum, teff and rice. Plus it had an important sounding name (which is why I took this photo from a low angle).

Why am I awake at 5am on Saturday?

I'm really tired at the moment. I'd like to go back to sleep but I can't. I had a dream where I was really, really angry. The kind of angry where your whole body tenses up and steam comes out of your ears. And now I can't go back to sleep because my body is so worked up from the dream. At least the cat is enjoying it.

The Fruit and Vege Box

Fruit and Vege Box
In an effort to curb our spending and have more variety in our fruit and vegetables Tomas and I have signed up for a weekly delivery of local organic produce. This is our second week and above is our box for the week.

The company we are using is called Food Connect. They source all their vegetables from within 5 hours of Brisbane - this week our tomatoes are from Bundaberg. Each week you get a newsletter that tells you about the food in the box, the farmers and the City Cousins who distribute the food.

In the box last week that was new for us was Silverbeet. This week it's a mystery vegetable. We thought it was Kale but after eating we're not too sure. It tasted like bok choy. We've eaten it all so there are no pictures to identify it from.

Last week I made Apple Pie because we had lots of apples. It was delicious. This week, we had bananas left over from the week before (I know, this sounds impossible but they were lady fingers) so I made banana bread.

The Cure - Beginning

Before - Lounge Room 5

The Apartment Therapy Fall Cure start's this week. One of the tasks to do before getting started was to document the before state of the unit. I've reverted back to my old Flickr account as the photo pool is hosted on Flickr.

Before - Dining Area 4

These are the flowers I bought on Sunday. Apparently we are supposed to buy flowers every week  - these are going to last a while though.

Before - The Entry 1

I got a head start on things around the house by tidying the entry.

Some of the things we're looking at completing as part of the The Cure are:
  • Tidy and spruce up the guest bedroom - including getting an actual bed for the room (second-hand from Tom's sister)
  • Making the couch less brown with some cushions of different colours
  • Getting the Casala chairs restored to their former glory
  • Getting the big chair restored to its former glory (if budget permits)
  • Tidying the balcony and making it a little more useable
I think this is an achievable list. Ideally I'd like to get some more  art on the walls, particularly in our bedroom but that's on the wish list.

Home Alone

Tomas has gone away for the rest of the week for a "man weekend". He has driven to Bundaberg to go camping and fishing with other men leaving Fenella and I to our own devices. So far we haven't done much, Fenella has done a lot of what you see in the picture above. I have cooked dinner and then facilitated what Fenella is doing in the photo above.

Last night we signed up to participate in Apartment Therapy's Fall Cure. It's essentially a 8 week program to clean, declutter and improve your apartment. One of my tasks this week is to take some pictures of the place as "before" images so I can upload them to the Flickr Pool.

I did purchase a yoghurt maker on ebay tonight though. I'm pretty excited about it - one of my workmates make his own yoghurt which sparked my purchase. Looking forward to making my first batch. The second batch will probably be the one worth looking forward to though.

And to finish, here is a picture of Fenella, looking quizzically at me because my lap is not available for her to recline on for the rest of the evening.

And another of her looking displeased despite being on my lap

Is this a sign of old age?

The other day at work, I noticed a stray hair. Not in the usual place, like escaping from my eyebrows or a hair I missed when shaving my legs. This hair was in the middle of my forehead.

I first spotted it at work in the morning and thought it was an escapee from my head. It was about an inch long and blonde (yes, I realise my hair isn't blonde which should have been a clue). I ignored because I thought it would fall off on its own. It remained in the middle of my forehead all day until I got home in the evening when a quick tug revealed it was actually attached to me. I removed it without haste.

I related this story at work (where I relate a lot of stories to be honest) and one of my workmates mentioned that sometimes lost hairs can reattach themselves to empty follicles. I doubted this and some quick wiki research did not return any results. However, I did find this gem: Let's Trim Our Hair In Accordance With The Socialist Lifestyle

Operation Good-bye Amanda's Tummy - Week 4

I'm into my fourth week of OGAT and so far so good. I'm making progress but importantly, I'm still enjoying it. My trainer has only come close to killing me once - on Tuesday last week when I was the only woman with three men. Not easy to keep up with them. This week, I've decided to pick up my efforts in the exercise department. Though I've been supplimenting the training sessions with one or two swimming sessions, it's not really enough. So I started riding my bike to work as well.

Today, I rode my bike home after training this morning. I think I'll be sore tomorrow.

Can't lift my arms

This morning I took the first steps in Operation Good-bye Amanda's Tummy and went to by first session of group training. Avid readers will remember that I used to do this three times a week but I stopped when Tom and I moved. So this morning I got out of bed at 4:50 to get ready to be at the Valley Pool for a 6am session. I remember training being hard but always feeling good afterwards. This morning was hard and I'm not feeling good right now. At this point in time, I'd like to go back to bed and have a little nap. Also I can't really lift my arms - they are weak. I'm sure that tomorrow there will be other parts of my body screaming in pain for me to worry about but right now, even typing draws protests from my arms. I'm going again on Friday morning so hopefully by then I actually capable of physical activity.

Tomas

Tomas is currently enjoying his morning sleep-in so I am taking this opportunity to write about him when he isn't looking over my shoulder.

Firstly, his birthday is coming up - 3rd of June to be precise. He announced to me yesterday as we were hanging out the clothes that he would like "wicked loot" for his birthday. There are of course other things that he wants so email me if you'd like a suggestion.

Secondly, on Friday night we went to the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) regional awards dinner. Tom's firm had two buildings in the awards one of which Tom did a lot of work one - the Kelvin Grove student accommodation. They received a regional commendation for the building which means that they are now in the running for a state award. I'm very proud of him. He says he'll be more excited if they win a state award.

The awards dinner was a dress-up affair and the theme was space. There were some good costumes there - I particularly like the Mr Squiggles complete with their own Blackboard. Tom and I made space invader costumes but due to their cumbersome size we didn't really wear them. We will take some pictures of them though before we re-appropriate them into something else.

Fenella does not know the meaning of public holidays - neither does my alarm clock

All day yesterday I was so looking forward to my sleep in this morning. I was imagining a peaceful morning, getting out of bed around 7:30-8. However, despite living with Fenella for one and a half years, I completely left her out of my sleep in fantasy. Sleeping is something Fenella does after we have left for work not at 5am in the morning.

Our regular morning ritual (Fenella and I, not Tomas and I. Tom's morning ritual is sleeping) goes as follows:
  • Fenella wakes up around 4:30 - 5. Walks up to my head, either sniffs me, or put her paw on my face to determine the amount of noise she will need to make in the next 45 minutes to wake me up properly.
  • She will then most likely prepare herself for the onslaught by running around the living room.
  • At approximately 5am she will jump up onto the drawers where my jewellery is and commence the wake-up Amanda routine. It goes something like this: pick up necklace in mouth, drop necklace onto other necklaces, repeat a million times
  • This will generally wake me up and I will give her death stares from the bed.
  • Finally at 5:30 my alarm will go off and if I don't get out of bed now, Fenella will up the ante just a little bit by starting to push items off the drawers.
And this is what happened this morning except for the fact that there was no way I was getting up a 5:30 this morning so I tried to ignore her - something that Tomas is very good at doing, he sleeps right through the whole morning ritual. At about 6:30 and after there wasn't much left to push off the drawers, I gave in got up. At least it's looking good for a nap later.

Coincidentally, as I was writing this Fenella was doing the following things:
  • Preparing to go to sleep on my side of the bed
  • Biting Tom's hand (he understands public holidays and is therefore still asleep) because she spotted it from her spot on my side of the bed
  • Further biting of Tom's hand because he moved it when she bit it the first time
  • More biting until Tom pushes her off the bed
  • Snoozing on top of her scratching post in the sunlight looking like the kind of cat who never attempt to lick the inside of her owner's mouth at 5am in the morning to wake her up

The 2020 Summit

ABC2 is broadcasting the 2020 Summit this weekend. I'm in two minds about the Summit.

Firstly, I think that getting people together to discuss ways to improve the country is a worthwhile thing. Debate and group contribution is generally a good way to come up with and develop good ideas into great ones.

Secondly, it's good way to connect the government with the people who know most about their fields as well as those who may not normally be consulted.

However I'm just not that convinced about the whole thing. From what I have seen until now, it's not about putting forward ideas and bandying them about, weeding out the impractical and useless ideas until you have a set of great ideas to take to the government. All I have seen so far, are speakers standing in front of their group pushing their ideas with no chance for discussion. I am sure that there is opportunity for debate but so far, it all seems quite political.

Also, from the telecasts I have picked up that in each group an emphasis has been placed on "cost negative" ideas. Does this mean that an idea that can be implemented cheaply will be rated over one that will require significant investment from the government and will deliver real improvement to Australians?

Finally, why is this a one-off event? Surely, turning the summit in a regular event will be beneficial to the country and ensure that we always have a good supply of fresh ideas for our future.

One last word. Participants at the summit have dubbed themselves: summiteers which kind of makes it sound like they have an immense obstacle to overcome...

Better late than never

About a month ago, I shaved my head for the Leukaemia Foundation's Shave for a Cure. I raised just over $800 thanks! The reaction has been almost exclusively positive and I may even shave it again soon. Growing your hair out is always awkward, more so the shorter it is to being with.

Most people have seen my newly shaved head but for those who haven't or who are on the other side of the world here's the proof that I really did shave my head.

Post-shave with the other 'baldies' at work

Too cool for you - almost finished the shave

Pure class - the mullet and the office's fake cigarette.

Fulfilling family obligations

I have promised two things to go on this blog: an updated list for my birthday (that was a while ago, I know) and what I thought of the movie I saw on the weekend. Let's start with the updated list:

  • Bike lights - I'm still using cheap ones from Kathmandu. I also don't have a place to mount the rear one, so if it's dark, I have to clip it to what I'm wearing or my backpack if I have it.
  • DS games: I bought Elite Beat Agents on the weekend and I love it. But I would still like: My Spanish Coach (my spanish is getting pretty rusty), Sim City, or Star Wars the Complete Saga (changed my mind about the Wii version)
  • A wok
  • Tablespoon/Teaspoon measures. Mine have just broken so I could do with some more. Probably multiple sets would be good as I'm always using the tablespoon with the wet ingredients before the dry ingredients
  • Sun lounge for the balcony - best consult with Tom here.
  • Jewellery Storage.
  • Laptop Case.

Now onto the Movie. Tom and I decided to go and see Juno on Friday night. We saw previews for it in the States and have wanted to see it ever since. It's been a long wait. And was it worth it? Yes. It's a really funny movie. The dialogue is very good though at times it seems a little manufactured and on the whole, it's a good story. I'd recommend it. Don't want to go into too much detail as I don't think that Ness and Cameron have seen it yet.

A touch of the sun

I am sunburnt. Hideously sunburnt.  I look like an English tourist.

Yesterday Tom had to go to Noosa to meet a client, so I went with him. Whilst he met with the client, I took a walk along the beach. The beach was quite pleasant except once I was on it, I couldn't get off it. It took me a over a kilometre to find my way off the beach and then another kilometre until I found civilisation. This two kilometre walk contributed greatly to my lobster-like appearance.

Once I'd reached Perigian, my inherited bookshop honing skills kicked into force and I picked a copy of Les Miserables, which I had been meaning to read since Paris and read for an hour in the park. This also contributed greatly to my lobster-like appearance.

So now I feel stupid for getting sunburnt and I'm picking stuff of my sticky, perpetually moisturised skin.

Doing nothing

After almost four weeks of continuous motion Tomas and I enjoyed a weekend of doing nothing. The sum total of our achievements for the weekend was:

  • going food shopping
  • finishing picross
That's it.

Whilst I enjoyed Christmas, I got very tired of constantly having people around and constantly having at least four people in the house at all times.

On a different note, I have an infection in my mouth caused by one of my wisdom teeth. This one is particularly bad, so bad that I'm taking anti-biotics to clear it up and I have an appointment at the dentist next week. I've started preparing myself for the extraction already.
